Indiana Education Statistics 2026: Schools, Enrollment & Spending
Indiana reported 1,919 operating public schools, 454 operating districts, and 1,040,190 students in school year 2024–25. The same NCES release reported 67,718 teachers in full-time-equivalent terms.

Enrollment Holds Near One Million After the 2020 Drop
Indiana public elementary-secondary student membership, fall 2019 through school year 2024–25
Enrollment fell 1.8% from fall 2019 to fall 2023. The 2024–25 count rose 0.7% from fall 2023 but remained 1.1% below the 2019 level.
Enrollment Movement Since 2019
- The largest one-year decline in the displayed series occurred between 2019 and 2020, when membership fell by 17,447 students.
- Counts stayed within a narrow band of about 1.033 million to 1.040 million from 2020 through 2024–25.
- The 2024–25 figure comes from the newer CCD final release; the 2019–2023 values come from the NCES Digest series.

Scale and Measurement Differences
- Indiana averaged about 542 students per operating school when 2024–25 membership is divided by the operating-school count.
- The CCD district total follows federal LEA definitions and includes more than traditional Indiana school corporations alone.
- FY 2024 current spending accounted for 80.5% of total reported expenditure, while capital outlay accounted for 16.8%.
Enrollment, Revenue Structure and Spending Composition
Three supporting views separate enrollment movement, funding-source shares, and operating expenditure functions.
Revenue Mix Compared With the U.S.
Share of public elementary-secondary revenue by source, fiscal year 2024
Indiana relied more heavily on state revenue and less heavily on local revenue than the national distribution. The federal share was nearly the same.
Current Spending Functions
Indiana current spending by broad function, fiscal year 2024
Instruction represented 54.9% of Indiana current spending; support services represented 39.5%.

Federal, State and Local Revenue Shares
Percentages are calculated from total public elementary-secondary revenue reported for fiscal year 2024.
| Geography | Federal | State | Local |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indiana | 11.4% | 55.9% | 32.7% |
| United States | 11.6% | 45.2% | 43.2% |
Indiana’s Revenue Mix Differs From the National Pattern
- Indiana’s state-source share exceeded the U.S. share by 10.6 percentage points.
- Its local-source share was 10.5 percentage points lower than the U.S. share.
- The federal shares differed by only 0.1 percentage point after rounding.
Current Spending by Function
Current spending covers operating costs and excludes capital outlay, debt transactions, and other noncurrent expenditure categories.
| Function | Amount | Share of current | Per pupil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instruction | $7.436B | 54.9% | $7,487 |
| Support services | $5.351B | 39.5% | $5,469 |
| Other current functions | $0.750B | 5.5% | $666 |
| All current spending | $13.537B | 100.0% | $13,622 |
Operating Spending Is Concentrated in Instruction and Support
- Instruction and support services together accounted for 94.5% of current spending.
- Instruction spending exceeded support-service spending by about $2.085 billion.
- Indiana’s nominal current spending per pupil was $3,997 below the U.S. figure of $17,619 in FY 2024.
What Separates Indiana’s Profile
The findings focus on state-specific scale, funding structure, and reporting context rather than repeating the table order.
Enrollment Scale and Recent Direction
Indiana remains a one-million-student public school system. The 2024–25 increase reversed the small decline reported for fall 2023, but enrollment remained below the 2019 level.
State Revenue Carries More Weight
State sources supplied 55.9% of Indiana school revenue, compared with 45.2% nationally. The difference is offset mainly by a smaller local-source share.
Total Dollars and Per-Pupil Rank Measure Different Things
Indiana reported $13.54 billion in current spending because it operates a large statewide system. Its FY 2024 per-pupil amount ranked 41st among the 50 states and District of Columbia on the selected nominal measure.
District Counts Need a Federal Definition
The 454 operating districts are CCD local education agencies. The count can include independent charter agencies and other LEA types, so it should not be treated as a count of traditional school corporations alone.

Units and Rounding
Census source tables report statewide finance totals in thousands of dollars. Displayed billions, percentages, and per-pupil amounts are rounded; detail may not add exactly to published totals.
The 2026 title identifies the publication edition, not a single universal data year. School system counts use school year 2024–25, historical enrollment uses fall counts through 2023 plus the newer 2024–25 CCD release, and finance measures use fiscal year 2024. Dollar values are nominal and are not adjusted for inflation or regional price differences.
Enrollment and teacher counts should not be used as direct denominators for the statewide finance totals unless the source methodology specifies the same pupil base. The Census per-pupil values use the survey’s finance denominator. The 41st-place figure applies only to FY 2024 nominal current spending per pupil and does not rank outcomes, school quality, or cost-adjusted resources.
