Current spending covers operational costs for public pre-K-12 education. Total expenditure also includes capital and other noncurrent categories. Census fiscal years are not uniform across every school system. NCES fall membership, KDE state reporting, and Census finance enrollment are retained as separate measures.
Spending comparisons describe reported fiscal inputs, not school quality or student outcomes. State rankings change with the selected measure. Nominal per-pupil amounts do not account for regional prices, district scale, enrollment composition, capital cycles, or service requirements.
