The latest full NYCPS Demographic Snapshot covers 2024–25 and reports 906,248 students in grades 3-K through 12 across Districts 1–32, District 75 and District 79. Borough, Community School District and student-group statistics below use that broader administrative dataset. The two enrollment measures are kept separate because their grade and district coverage differs.

- District 1–32 enrollment declined by 181,194 students over the period, while charter enrollment increased by 40,094.
- 2023–24 was the only year in the displayed series with an increase in combined enrollment, rising by 12,344 students before declining again in the next two years.

Class-size compliance movement

NYCPS publishes several enrollment products with different grade spans, administrative units and reporting dates. Matching each statistic to its denominator prevents false comparisons.
2025–26 K–12 trend
897,480 students is the current citywide total for District 1–32 schools plus charter schools in the Spring 2026 district-planning series. It excludes 3-K, Pre-K, District 75 and District 79 from the District 1–32 component.
2024–25 NYCPS demographic total
906,248 students is the broader 3-K–12 NYCPS administrative total for Districts 1–32, 75 and 79. The borough, demographic and Community School District modules use this release.
Charter reporting
The Spring 2026 K–12 series reports 144,641 charter students for 2025–26. The 2024–25 Demographic Snapshot reports 148,089 charter students under its own reporting coverage. The figures are not a like-for-like one-year change.
Community districts and citywide NYCPS
The 32 Community School Districts total 870,018 students in 2024–25. District 75 and District 79 add another 36,230 students, bringing the NYCPS Demographic Snapshot total to 906,248.

The 2026 edition label does not mean every statistic represents the same school year. The main enrollment trend uses 2025–26 K–12 District 1–32 and charter data. School counts, borough enrollment, Community School District enrollment and demographics use the latest full 2024–25 administrative release. Grade coverage and District 75, District 79, charter and early-childhood treatment differ across these sources, so the totals should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.
